please debug -- icon colors

I had managed to successfully deploy my own .gif as the single icon,
and to load info text onto each marker. however, i'm not having much
luck with my efforts to vary the .gif based on an underlying value.

In my application, the records are stored in an array, so that
fieldname[j]= the value of the field in the current record. I also have
a dump running at the bottom of the source code to prove that those
values are in fact in the array.

What I can't get to work is some kind of If-Then-Else routine that
swaps in the right icon.. you can see what I'm trying in the source
code...
