Thanks again for the above advice. It has been running now for 4 weeks
with minor improvements, including getting the lat long to show with
fewer decimal points and also with degrees and minutes output format.

The incidence of blocks of hundreds of log file lines per visitor,
calling the tiny marker multiple times has reduced, but it still
happens a few times per day, with both code 200 and code 304 log
listings. Mystery ?

Monthly count is 288063 calls for the icon and 6655 calls to the page.
