Thanks very much, Mike!

I moved the script to just before the </body>, and now the entire page,
including the map, displays properly, but then IE 6.0 comes up with the
same error message box as before. See

Then I moved the script to the <head> section, as I have seen in other
examples.. That got rid of the error message box, but the map doesn't
display at all.

The second test fails the same way in Firefox, so that does not seem to
be the answer. The 7b test works fine in Firefox.

So, we're on the right track, it seems, but be haven't quite licked the
problem yet.
