[lug] Kubuntu Root

I was using Kubuntu 5.10 i386 (with a i686 kernel, if you want to be
precise) and I was trying to use a root console, but it didn't work.
I understand that for Kubuntu my root password is the same as my user
password (which is how I can use things like Etheral, Adept,
Synaptic...). However, this same password does not work with the root
console... or when trying to login without the GUI. However,
interestingly enough, when I use aptitude (in Konsole) it accepts my
user's password as root. Anyone know how this works? I like to be
able to use the root console from time to time, since it's really the
only way I know of to edit some configuration files (like 3ddesktop's)
which need root privilages.

If anyone knows what's going on I'd really appreciate it if they'd tell me.
