I do not know if this answers your posting, but
you can see from
http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/docs/en/protocol.html#faq_sitemap_size

when uncompressed and can contain a maximum of 50,000 URLs. This means
that if your site contains more than 50,000 URLs or your Sitemap is
bigger than 10MB, you must create multiple Sitemap files and use a
Sitemap index file. You should use a Sitemap index file even if you
have a small site but plan on growing beyond 50,000 URLs or a file size
of 10MB.

I think the solution would be for you to use a sitemap index file
( see
http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/docs/en/protocol.html#faq_sitemap_size
Sample XML Sitemap Index ).
This sitemap index file would include the sitemap files.
You can organize your sitemap files on directories
or last modified date or both.
