Google doesn't support wildcards (e.g., the way that Deja used to).
I don't think you can search for partial strings (even stems).
Either is what you really need to find what you're looking for.
I further think that Google often ignores punctuation
and can find things in a post's headers.
Hence, I think it's possible that you are actually finding some
pages which contain the two strings "Google" and "Talk"
separated by one character and 1 and 0 separated by one character.
E.g. here is the first hit from your second search, in its original
form:
http://groups.google.com/group/Google-Talk-Help-Discuss/msg/0338bd518b6966b8?dmode=source
Notice for example, that it contains "MIME-Version: 1.0" which could
be satisfying
the revised second term.
