Sebastian is right, I also got the correct 404 not found
HTTP response for a sample non-existent URL.

What is the URL of your sitemap, and also
what is the domain of the URL of the verification file,
is it http://adman.freehomepage.com/googlexxxxxxx
(just the domain of the verification file, not the whole URL)
