Well, aside from the fact that the minimum bidding increment is one
cent, and that's 10,000 micros not 1,000 it looks okay. There is a
maximum bid too, I think it's around $100.00, I'm not sure. Is is
possible that some of the keywords are going over that?

I can change the length. The problem is with the height. The logo
height is 32. I like to have a logo that is about 20. I have seen many
sites where they have modified reduced size logo. All these sites use
the logo in the same fashion that I want to use. I keep writing to
Adsense team but no satisfactory answer..
Any way I have been thinking about the incoming links as well. May be
we should either form a group or start a new subject, inviting people
to interchange the links. The links should make the subject sense.. You
think Jewellery goes with Curry??? Ha ha..

I do not know exactly what is wrong, but
your website redirects to a custom error page
and returns the HTTP response 200 (OK) for
a non-existent URL. Google cannot be sure
if the response 200 (OK) that it gets when asking for the
verification file is because the file exists on
your server or not, since it gets the same
HTTP response 200 (OK) for all URLs on your site,
if it exists a file on your server or not.

If you can, setup your webserver to return
a 404 (Not Found) HTTP response for a non-existent URL.

Trick of the Day: Plug-in Fine-Tuning

For our developers here's a neat trick to help you easily develop, test
and fine-tune a Sidebar script plug-in without the need to repeatedly
install the plug-in after each modification.

1. Create the installer for your plug-in and install it once. The
plug-in is installed in the Program Files directory under Google
Desktop Search\Plugins\YourPluginName. Once installed you can modify
the plug-in script sources directly.

2. To test changes after modifying the script sources use the
"Add/Remove Panels" menu option to unload the old plug-in and load in
the new version.

3. Once you are satisfied with the results transfer the modified files
back to your original code base and use the plug-in installer to create
the final plug-in package.

Tip of the Day: Email Filtering

To prevent specific incoming email messages to appear in your Sidebar
Email panel, you can create an email filter.

For example, let's say you are using Google Desktop to index both your
personal and business email accounts, but do not want your personal

set to your personal email address will instruct the Email panel to

First stab at Google Map

Although I have looked through the documentation, would appreciate some
help with using the maps:

I have a database application that provides various reports based on
matched criteria, the final output being number of results returned per
state of the US.

So, all I require is a map of the US with the values I returned from
the query to be displayed at the center (lat-long) of the map of that
state. This assignment has very aggressive timelines, so the most I can
do is spend 1-2 days on this.

Could anyone point me to a sample that does something similar? The
requirement for displaying the value at the center of the state is not
a hard requirement, any location within the boundaries would be
sufficient.

To summarize, if I can plot a 1 inside CA and a 2 inside TX, etc. I
have accomplished my goal 95%.

Icon -- click action

Hi,

In an "ideal world" what I'm trying to would be handled via ajax, but
I'm just not there yet...

I have a map with icons -- no problem.
I have click or mouseover listeners to display/hide window -- no
problem.
I can even have a hyperlink in the info window -- no problem.

But, I can't figure out how to wake the action of the listener be a
hyperlink/new page.

Any ideas?

Ashamed to ask... adding label to inner html of bubble?

I've got a map working pretty much the way I want it to - drawing data
from the external XML and all of that... but it is missing the bold
label at the top when you crack the bubbles open.

It seems (from my limited JS experience) that I'm supposed to add a bit
of HTML to here - maybe wrapping the name or label attribute in h3 tags
or something? But I can't make it work... syntax ignorance perhaps?

I think you may need to change
<a href="javascript:tohere(RAGFLWEST)">
to
<a href="javascript:tohere(\"RAGFLWEST\")">

because tohere() is expecting a string with the contents "RAGFLWEST",
not a variable called RAGFLWEST.

You need to use \" because you're already using ' quotes for the
Javascript and " quotes for the HTML.

they even do adwords that way (I think there's even a tool out there to
create misspellings of your keywords so that you can use them all).

I have been saving documents in specific folders on my "C" driver.  It is not the standard my docs folder.  when I do a searh for one of those documents, it will show it in my docs/recent.  Of course when that is checked to bring up, it says the document isn't there.  It never shows it in the folder that it has been saved to.

you can set the character-encoding, but you still have to be careful if
you're transferring special characters in XML to javascript or html.

It's probably the safest bet to use the character codes... that way you
won't ever have to worry about the client's locale settings and default
character set.

Google maps broken for some Seattle addresses

Google maps shows incorrect locations for some addresses in the Queen
Anne neighborhood in Seattle, displaying them as Downtown locations.

Try, for example, "705 2nd Ave W, Seattle, WA" in both Google maps and
then Mapquest (the latter gets it right). Google appears to be ignoring
the directional after the street name. Doesn't matter if I spell it out
"West" or abbreviate it "W", it gets ignored by Google.

I'm not completely surprised about this, Seattle addresses are
something of a mess; the city has eleven different street addressing
systems in use. Still, it should do the right thing.

Google cache contains old copy

I redesigned a website, generated the ncessary sitemap files -- it's
been verified and crawled a number of times since. The problem I'm
having is that the Google cache continues to have a copy from
2005/07/05~ Any tips on how I can get the cache updated?

Generally GDS only indexes when the computer is idle. Leave it on for a
half or one hour, and it should be fine.
To check if indexing is turned off, click the arrow to bring up the GDS
menu (If you're in deskbar mode, it's to the right of the search field,
if you're in sidebar mode, it's to the right of the word google)
If there's a menu item called "Resume indexing" indexing is dusabled,
and can be turned on by selecting that menu item.

I don't have an answer, but I have the same issue. Mine stopped on
October 30th. It still seems to work fine for finding older items.
The only option I've seen is to do a complete re-index (or reinstall
the program), but I will lose so much past info (cached web pages, AIM
chats, etc) that I've avoided doing that. I would love to find a
better solution!

[Gmail-Users] Can't use standard view to send mails

Currently, neither me nor my roommates can send email or save for later
using gmail's web forms in Standard view. We use a variety of operating
systems and browers, mostly Firefox on Windows and Debian Linux.
However, I just discovered that the "standard HTML" view works.

The problem started yesterday when I was playing around with the QoS
settings on our linksys router. I restored the configuration to the
last known good one, but we're still having issues. I've cleared my
cookies, cache, everything on Firefox and this has not solved the
problem.

I think that my roommate also had a problem with yahoo's webmail forms
and some kind of win ftp application, but I am able to ssh, scp and
port forward just fine. We don't think it's the router because this
configuration is known to be good.

If gmail standard view uses Ajax, could state information on the server
side no longer be in synch with our computers?

i read this all the time, but for my areas testes (southern and western
france, northern italy, switzerland, austria, germany, hongkong area,
arizona, utah, thailand, and others) these are exactly the same. some
images added to GE came in later to GM (i only observed this around
Vienna) and it was only a couple of weeks later.

i am just looking for a way of checking at least points and extents i
load directly if there are tiles available. the getmaxzoom.php does a
good job and i have no problem running this a lot of times in order to
get an information about the zoom level 1/0 coverage in the areas i am
interested in.

but: i was thninking/hoping for a smarter way. google not offering this
as a service doesn't mean others should not do it or not try to.

Accelerator is running in front of Zope. Usually it is either Squid or
Apache with Proxy Caching.

I'd have to see access logs of server running in front of Zope to see
if there is problem before investigating case further.

Re: Vanishing store

Froogle is very slow at present and because of this people are
re-loading their feeds several times because they think it hasn't been
accepted, when in fact it's just waiting in a long queue. This adds to
the Froogle Team's workload, making the queue longer and slowing it
down further. It also results in the same feed being at different
stages of processing, which I suspect is confusing the system and
causing products or stores to disappear.

The whole process of creating a feed to getting products to list, can
take three or four weeks, so you need patience!

News Panel: "Don't Show" goof

My boss accidentally clicked on the "Don't show me items like this"
button in the News panel. From what I see in the archives, there's no
way to reverse that. Do I have that about right, or is there some way
to reverse that option?

What are the chances of Google providing the ability to simply specify
an address (or lat/lng of course)... and what do you suspect the
timeframe on that would be?

Also, it would be nice to see the ability to add routes

experience with html and asp.

I am using the asp page to grab the data from the database and make it
into an XML file. The code is made of up snippets from another Google
maps user.

Hello Geoff,
Google is not trying to generate a 404 http response, it
is checking what response you have for a non-existent URL,
with a probe404 URL. If your website returns 200 (OK) HTTP response
for a non-existent URL, then Google cannot be sure that the
200 (OK) response that it gets from your verification file's URL
means that the file is indeed there, since your website
gives this response also for non-existent URLs.
Your website is setup to do a 302 redirect to a custom
error page that gives the HTTP response 200 (OK) for
non-existent URLs, so Google gets the resulting 200 (OK) response
for a non-existent URL (the same as for an existent URL).
If you can, change the setup, so to return a 404 (Not Found)
HTTP resonse for a non-existent URL.

are displaying as they should. Originally the asp code only had
<%Response.contentType="text/xml"%> and I was geting the strange
character replacement. Since I changes the conentType the french
characters display just fine when viewing the file in FF so I assumed
that IE was reading it the same way but according to your post it's
not.

I tried to add the standalone item but it still does not work.

Not really sure how to fix it.

It is not the verification file that google has an issue with... What
the error message is telling you is that when your 404 error page is
being served up, it is giving a 200 response, page exists. Googlebot
cannot tell that the page it asked for is missing because your custom
404 page does not respond appropriately. Google tests for this
situation so it does not crawl/cache your 404 error page and serve it
up in results just because you removed a file.

A call to http://mosaicpm.co.uk/random_page.html gets this as your
response header.

Some good news...

GWA *does* appear to work fine w/ AOL Explorer with no extra
configuration. In fact, it is "accelerating" better than it was under

ok.

There is something on your server side that denies Google to fetch the
sitemap. It look like you have Squid or some other Zope accelerator and
it does not allow Google to fetch sitemap.

Study your logs and provides records that are hits from Google. It look
like the status returned to Google is not 200 but 403 (Forbidden) or
something.

Worked perfectly. Thanks a lot.

When I go walking I convert the track log from the GPS into GPX format
and then lay that over a map. So I'll always know what the max and min
bounds are. Come to think of it, I could work them out as the data is
read from the GPX file, rather than hard coding them by hand.

map.spec.getLowestZoomLevel and should work in IE, Firefox and Opera.

I might have missed it, but I couldn't find any mention of
map.spec.getLowestZoomLevel in the docs. Are there other "goodies"
hidden away somewhere?

For example, I prefer my maps to start up in hybrid mode. But on a big
screen (1600 x 1200 on a 21" display) with a small area and the browser
maximised, sometimes the map loads at a zoom level that doesn't have
the hybrid data available.

Rather than gettting that "sorry we don't have any images message" is
it possible to test whether hybrid data is available before the map
displays
i.e.
IF hybrid data not available at this zoom level THEN swtich to ordinary
map mode.

Highway exits

Why are highway exits not marked on the maps?

Locate by pointing?

Why is it not possible to get the longitude, latitude, Zip code and
place name if there is one, by pointing to a place on the map. Rather,
you have to guess and type the nearest address to it. It would be very
useful to get directions through along a preferred route, such as
avoiding toll roads.

Currently, you can't even search for an exit or an highway intersection.

Select menu button does not call function

I have been using a select menu and an input button to create a filter
on my xml and java based maps, but a new version of the page based off
the blackpool code does not work. The error message is that the
function "is not defined", though I have checked and the function does
exist, and is spelled correctly.

I updated the code to increase the speed of the page, largely using
code from blackpool as I said. An older (and dangerously slow) version

Interesting. I noticed those function definitions when I examine the
code earlier, since they are not the usual practice in the API code.
Usually, these kind of event handlers are coded as anonymous functions.

Those functions are only used in the immediately following function
call. They could have been coded as anonymous functions. Perhaps they
were coded this way for easier debugging.

Does you parser detect other problems?

My company is interested in using the Google Sitemaps technology. The
FAQ says Google welcomes company sites using sitemaps. The TOS says it
can not be used for commercial purposes at all.

Which is correct? Should my company go ahead with its plans to create
sitemap files and submit them, or should we abandon the whole
enterprise?

I am perplexed. I created a sitemap file
(http://www.nauticalmind.com/sitemap.xml) (it's ~1.3MB) for the
bookstore I work at over a month ago. The file's verified etc., we're
collecting stats and some of our pages are being crawled by Google.

*But* many of our individual book pages --
e.g.
http://www.nauticalmind.com/customer/product.php?productid=66137&cat=3&page=6
-- are not being crawled. It seems that any book more than three links
away from our homepage (e.g. on the third page of some category
catalogue) aren't being looked at -- despite inclusion in the sitemap.

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong? Is it lack of patience or
something about the way our sitemap's setup? Any help is much
appreciated.

Both the html and xml pages are presented as containing UTF-8 encoded
characters. Instead, they contain Windows-1252 or ISO-8859-1 encoded
characters.

You need to match the character encoding of the page with the character
set in the headers of the page. If you write the appropriate header in
both the ASP scripts

content-type: text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1

content-type: text/xml;charset=ISO-8859-1

then the browser will be informed of the character set encoding of the
data. You will need to figure out how to do this in ASP yourself.

It is very possible that many of the pages we visit on the net have
incorrect character set values, but it is not noticable because they
only display the characters on the US-English keyboard.

The accented characters that you can enter easily on European and
French-Canadian keyboards (or with difficulty on the US keyboard) can
be represented in different ways in the document. You may see the
correct characters glyph displayed on your system, but the wrong symbol
on another machine, or even in a different application on the same
machine, when the application guesses wrong about the encoding of your
data.

The charset clause of the content-type header eliminates the guessing.

As you can see, there are no spaces in the image URL, if you copy &
paste in the browser address bar it works fine, and we have no
robot.txt file on our server. Finally, we have had several successful
feeds since July (we generate a feed automatically once a month) and
the pcitures were working once, but they now do not appear. We're not
sure when they started failing.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

I've just checked your site and your robot meta tags seem to look OK, I
don't use robot meta tags because I want search engines to search and
by default they search, less to go wrong.
I noticed your Title and it is your domain name. Search engines give a
lot of weight to titles concerning search terms. Not too many people
are going to type in your domain name when doing a search. The title
should contain your main search term that people are going to type into
search engines when looking for what you are offering.
If I was looking for a site like yours I would maybe type in "birthdays
gifts" "things for birthdays" although many search engines are smart
enough to figure out the individual words in your title many are not so
use single words with out the dashes. Use keywords that other people
are going to type in when looking for a page like yours, not words that
you want people to see. Think; my friend's birthday is coming up let me
check the Internet. What search terms am I going to use to find a gift
for my friend. the word birthday may nor even be used.
Try using http://www.wordtracker.com/ they offer a free trail. Check
the hits that certain keywords get. This way you can choose keywords
that get a greater amount of hits. I had a great site, it ended up
number one on all the search engines, for one keyword I was number one
out of 69,000,000 but I couldn't understand why I wasn't getting any
hits. It ended up no one was using that keyword in their searches.
Always do research when optimizing for keywords.
Check how many people are using that keyword and for what, and check
your competition for the number one spot for that keyword.

I think the problem is that your GEvent is wired to a global variable
(marker). Every time you add a new marker you link the GEvent to the
latest marker. This is why the infowindow always displays over the last
marker you added.

Try rewriting your script so that markers are created in a function
where you also link the GEvent, like in the documentation example:

Double Byte Characters in Access

I have a Access 2000 Data Base with many forms and reports. I am trying

to use double byte characters in the database. For example the Chinese
and Japanise languages use double byte characters. I am able to store
the characters in the database and produce reports containing those
characters. I do not create recordsets for the reports I build a string
that contains
the SQL statement and pass it to the recordsource property of the
report.

Part of the application allows the user to archive the
database to a comma seperated text file. When I use the archive sub
routine it creates the archive file and there are no error messages
however it replaces the double byte characters with question marks. If

you look at the code below you will find the code where we are
looping through the dao recordset rstExport, field by field. There are
183 fields in the recordset thus we set up a loop For x = 1 To 183.
We are putting the values of each field it in a variable called mydata.

After we put a field in mydata we add a comma. If the data in each of
the fields is data type dbText we write to the mydata variable one
way. If the field is not dbText we write to the mydata variable another

way.

I ran the program in Debug mode and found that the double byte
characters are not in the DAO recordset. When you do a mose over the
rstExport.Fields(22).Value which is the first field that had the double

byte it says "????". That value is dbText so it goes to the first part
of the if and populates mydata thusly:

convert2quotes(Nz(rstExport.Fields(x).Value, "")) & Chr(34)
So now I have to figure out why the double byte characters are not in
the DAO recordset. I don't know if it makes any difference but I do not

have a Chinese keyboard or the Chinese version of Windows and in
regional options English is set as the language. I have been copying
and pasting double byte characters into the applications interface
using
the character map application.

I can't stop this feature. Is there a way to do that?

Game
The game play involves getting to the next level. Each level is only one webpage.

Loot
If someone manages to uncover the cryptic email address (appears in the last level) first and sends a mail to that ID (further clear instructions will be there in the last level itself) along with his/her personal details and the screenshot of the last level will win Rs. 2000 Cash Prize. Hurry!

Rules
Get to the next level in whichever fashion... but don't use spoilers (answers cracked by other people).

Hints

1. Look for clickable objects on the page, within text, even within pictures.
2. Use Google wherever you think you need it. Most levels anyway require some amount of Googling.
3. Some levels require login and passwords to reach them. These are simple words that can be found on any of the levels preceding it, or maybe the result of manipulating something on these levels, or the result of a Google on anything on these levels.
4. Look closely at the pictures on the levels, if any, to find clues & hints. But don't be bound by them... some of these pics are there just because we want to show them off :-)
5. "May the source be with you". Answers to some levels may just be hidden in the source code of the webpage itself. Just look at the source of the page to find things that may seem like keys to further levels.
6. The way to get to the next level for certain levels after getting the keyword/clue may be to change a word/term in the URL (the http:// thing in the address bar of your browser). Most often than not, it's the last part before the .asp (like 'game' for this page).
7. Some amount of binary (.exe, .jpg, .mp3) download/manipulation may be required to get the hint to next level.
8. Not everything that looks like a hint may point to the right answer/path... we would like to play with your mind once in a while you know :-)
9. IMPORTANT: Any text answer required anywhere in the game will always be lowercase, not UPPERCASE, cAmelcase, mIxEdcASe or Sentencecase.

Window opening in wrong place

I've got the NOAA webservice working fine, what sort of problem are you
having with it? The code samples on the NOAA site are not compatible
with every OS, I think. I've got some PHP code that I could post
someplace if you like, though it's kind of a hack.

By default the original message will be included, quoted. If you want
you can always just erase it.

An easy way to do that is the following: while being in the reply
textarea and before starting to type in your reply, Select All (CTRL+A
in Windows or Right-click-->Select All) and hit Delete.

Question about SiteMap Filters

Hello all,

I am trying to configure the filters to index all .html files and
exclude all other files. However, there are also several directories
that I would like to exclude from .html walking and indexing. The
problem is, it seems that the filter of:

<filter action="pass" type="wildcard" pattern="*.html*" />

supersedes all other filters such as (example):

<filter action="drop" type="wildcard" pattern="*/mydirectory/*" />

The directories within my drop filters are still being walked and
indexed.

Here are example filters in my config.xml file:

<filter action="pass" type="wildcard" pattern="*.html*" />

<filter action="drop" type="wildcard" pattern="*/mydirectory/*" />

<filter action="drop" type="wildcard" pattern="*" />

I tried adding disallow directives to my robots.txt file as in the
following example:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /mydirectory/

My robots.txt has passed a validation test so the robots.txt file
should prevent the disallowed directories from being walked and indexed
but unfortunately they are still being walked and indexed. Has anyone
got any suggestions on successfully setting up certain directories from
being walked and indexed while still using the *.html* filter?

I wonder if the problem with products and stores going missing
periodically, is to do with people uploading their feeds more often
than necessary. I see a lot of postings from people with stuff
disappearing but they don't say how often they upload. I know that
once a feed is uploaded it takes a while to show the new data but I
think people get impatient and cause themselves more problems!
Uploading once every two to three weeks should be enough.

IE Issues

Hi All,

I am having big problems with two pages I am trying to load. Of course,
there is no problem with FireFox, just with IE.

At http://www.sdspoi.ca/test/fr/xmltest.asp the icons do not show up in
IE, works fine with FF

At http://www.sdspoi.ca/test/fr/circuitResults.asp then click on any of
the Detail links, the details page crashes when trying to load map.
Again, no problem with FF.

I have been all through the newsgroups and am going nuts trying various
options but none seem to work. I have tried shifting where the JS
script goes, as suggested in this newsgroup, in the body or in the
header. Always works in FF never in IE.

It's a great application but if I can't get it to work also in IE I
will have to give up on the project.
